OpenRouter alternatives
OpenRouter is a good default when you want the widest model choice. The reasons people look elsewhere are usually payment (a 5.5% fee on card top-ups, and UPI is not among its listed payment methods), protocol (Claude tools that want the native Anthropic API), or a preference for a direct vendor contract. Here are four realistic options and when each fits.
ScaleMax wrote this page and is one of the options. Third-party facts come from the linked pages, read on October 14, 2026; OpenRouter facts come from its FAQ.
1. ScaleMax
A prepaid API with OpenAI-compatible and native Anthropic Messages endpoints for Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and more. Checkout takes UPI, cards and net banking in rupees and crypto, with no payment fee. The smallest pack costs $2.50 (₹250) and adds $25 of usage credit; larger packs add up to 11× their price.
Best for: Developers in India, and anyone running Claude Code, Codex or Cline who wants one prepaid key.
Trade-off: A curated catalogue, much smaller than OpenRouter’s; no per-request choice of upstream provider.
2. Requesty
An LLM router that charges model cost plus 5%, with a free plan limited to free models and 200 requests a day, and “600+ models behind one OpenAI-compatible endpoint” by its own count.
Best for: Teams who want a very large model list and a simple cost-plus pricing rule.
Trade-off: Payment methods are not stated on its pricing page; no Anthropic Messages endpoint is mentioned there.

3. Going direct to Anthropic or OpenAI
An account with each model vendor, billed by that vendor. You get first-party terms and new features on release day.
Best for: Companies that need a contract with the vendor, or a feature the day it ships.
Trade-off: One account and one bill per vendor. Both bill API credit in US dollars by card and do not offer UPI.
4. Self-hosting an open-source gateway
Run an OpenAI-compatible proxy on your own server in front of vendor keys you already hold.
Best for: Teams with vendor accounts already in place who want full control over routing and logs.
Trade-off: You operate the server, hold every vendor account, and still pay each vendor in its own currency and method.
How to choose
| If you mainly need… | Look at |
|---|---|
| The widest model choice | OpenRouter, or Requesty |
| To pay in rupees with UPI | ScaleMax |
| Claude Code or the Anthropic SDK | ScaleMax or Anthropic direct |
| A contract with the model vendor | Anthropic or OpenAI direct |
| Full control of routing and logs | A self-hosted gateway |
OpenRouter alternatives: questions
What is the best OpenRouter alternative for India?
If paying in rupees matters, ScaleMax accepts UPI, Indian cards and net banking with no payment fee. OpenRouter’s FAQ lists cards, AliPay and USDC crypto, and does not mention UPI (as of 14 October 2026).
Which OpenRouter alternative has the most models?
Of the options here, Requesty states 600+ models behind one endpoint. ScaleMax keeps a smaller, curated catalogue of the major model families.
Is there an OpenRouter alternative with a native Anthropic API for Claude Code?
Yes. ScaleMax serves the Anthropic Messages API at https://api.scalemax.pro, so Claude Code needs only ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL and a key. Going direct to Anthropic also gives you the native API.
