Use ScaleMax models in the Zed editor

Zed’s agent panel can use any OpenAI-compatible provider. Add ScaleMax under language_models in settings.json (or through Agent settings) and keep the key out of the file.

Zed settings for ScaleMax

Enter these values in Zed. A Pay as you go key and a token pack key use different base URLs — use the one that matches the key you bought.

  1. Open Agent settings (agent: open settings) and find the LLM Providers section.
  2. Choose Add Provider, name it scalemax, and enter the ScaleMax API URL.
  3. Add each model by its exact ID with its context window, or paste the settings.json block above.
  4. Enter the key in the provider settings, or export SCALEMAX_API_KEY before starting Zed.

Installer support

The ScaleMax installer does not configure Zed. Add the provider from Zed’s Agent settings or with the settings.json block below.

Models to use in Zed

Rates are the published ScaleMax rates per million tokens, read from the live catalogue. Your key must include a model before Zed can call it — GET /v1/models with the key lists exactly which.

Good to know

  • Zed names the key variable after the provider ID in upper snake case plus _API_KEY, so a provider called scalemax reads SCALEMAX_API_KEY.
  • Use the context window from the model’s ScaleMax page as max_tokens.

Troubleshooting

Zed reports a missing API key
Enter it in the provider’s settings, or start Zed from a shell where SCALEMAX_API_KEY is exported.
A model returns 403 or not found
Its name must be an exact ID your key includes. Check with GET /v1/models.

Zed's field names on this page were checked against Zed: Use API access (OpenAI compatible) on October 14, 2026. If Zed has renamed a setting since, follow its documentation and keep the ScaleMax values above.

ScaleMax is not affiliated with the makers of Zed. Compatibility describes the API protocol; Zed's own features and plans are provided by its developer.

Zed and ScaleMax: questions

Can I use Claude in Zed with a ScaleMax key?

Yes. Add ScaleMax as an OpenAI-compatible provider and list the Claude model ID, for example claude-sonnet-5-5, under available_models.

Where should the ScaleMax key go in Zed?

In the provider’s settings inside Zed, or in the SCALEMAX_API_KEY environment variable. Zed’s documentation advises against putting keys in settings.json.

Does the ScaleMax installer configure Zed?

No. Zed takes a few lines of settings, shown on this page.
